Andrew and Alyson

“You can’t be serious, Alyson,” Andrew gasped. “You can’t tell me you were having an affair with that creep!” He shuddered. “You were fucking that old man?” The images of it filled him with disgust. “You touched him? He touched you?”

Alyson and Andrew faced off in combat in their dark front room, now less inviting than ever. It was as if there had been an earthquake. Books scattered on the floor, shabby chairs overturned, the kitchen floor covered with smashed plates and glasses.

The devastation was Alyson’s way of coping after Officer Kubo turned up with the news that Andrew had found the president murdered, had blood on his clothes and needed clean ones.

For Andrew it was a day of shocking discoveries; not only some terrible natural disaster at his home but, far worse, the slim and pale elegant blonde with whom he had shared everything for the past four years, was replaced by a frightening creature with a face twisted in wrath and grief, her chignon tangled round her head.

Could this red-faced, screaming harridan really be Alyson? Blurting out the news that she had been sleeping with Professor Nomura for the past six months?

What a nightmare! He had no idea of her being unfaithful? She had been uninterested in sex for a long time but Andrew blamed a low libido caused by depression.

Had Alyson suddenly gone mad? She was always a bit reclusive, but this was a double life, a secret existence, sneaking off at night when he was sound asleep.

“What a way to hear the news!” she spluttered angrily when he entered the front door. “From a damned cop!”

Exhausted, Andrew sat down in the entrance hallway to take off his shoes. As she continued, he felt paralysed, unable to get up.

“Masaki was my lover,” Alyson said. “I loved him! He loved me, too!

He got to his feet in astonishment and anger. Speechless, he followed Alyson into the front room.

Finally he said, “Masaki?”

“You’re so useless! Everyone says you’re so nice! To me, that means you don’t do anything. Why I ever married you is beyond me.”

Tears streamed down her cheeks. “I saw him only last night. When you came home yesterday afternoon, saying you still hadn’t organised your contract, I felt like hitting you. I couldn’t stand the limbo. I rang Masaki on his mobile and we arranged to meet at 10.00 at a little dump of a bar half an hour away. I knew something was wrong when I saw him, he was in such a state. He’d just seen Professor Hunter. He said he’d kicked up a hell of a fuss about the changes Masaki was going to make at the university. He said he couldn’t concentrate on us just now, that perhaps we should end it. That was just the worry talking, he didn’t mean it.”

Andrew was battered by her words. He wanted to retaliate. He adopted a contemptuous tone. “Was Nomura the new Bill, your latest sexual experiment?”

Alyson lunged at him beating her fists on his chest.
